Ha Nam is a land rich in potentials for developing a diversified economy. Since re-establishing the province, Ha Nam has gained significant progress in socioeconomic development, which initialized to promote its industrialization and modernization.
Its economy is developing with relatively high speed and stably. Province's GDP grew up 8.4% per year during 2001 - 2003, higher in comparison with nation's development speed as well as some other provinces. Agricultural production increased 3.72% per year (13.5% higher than that during 1997 - 2000); industrial production and construction, 18.8% per year (increased 2.4 times in comparison with that during 1997 - 2000); and turnover of commercial and service industry, 12.3%/year (40.3% higher than that during 1997 - 2000).
Although Ha Nam is still an agricultural province, its economic structure is trending forward the increase in industrial production and service, and reduction in agricultural production. Industrial production and construction increased from 19.11% in 1997 to 34.6% in 2003, agricultural production reduced from 48.29% in 1997 to 33.6% in 2003, and services contributed 1.8% to the whole economy. Export value gained 30.5 million dollars.
Industry
The strengths of Ha Nam's industry is cements and building materials production, textiles and garments.
Ha Nam has a great limestone reserves (more than 7.4 billion m3) which are raw materials for producing cement, lime, light powder and building materials; gemstones used for interior decoration. Moreover, it has clay mines used for making bricks, tiles, porcelains, cements; and some mines of peat and dolomite. Most of those mineral resources dispose near roads. This is convenient for exploiting, processing and transportation. Limestone in Ha Nam has a good and stable quality, and fits for producing high quality cement.

| But Son Cement Factory |
At this time, there are six cement manufactures in Ha Nam with total capacity of 1.77 million tons per year, especially But Son Cement Manufacture with a capacity of 1.4 million tons a year. This manufacture locates in a place where is convenient for transportation, 3 km away from Phu Ly river port, 7 km away from Phu Ly railway station. Its products meet the requirements of high quality construction works.
But Son Cement Manufacture is laid down as a policy the double of its capacity (2.8 million tons a year). It needs the investment capital of 160 million dollars. Cement industry of Ha Nam is calling for investment in any form.

| Moc Bac tyunel bricks |
In the field of producing building materials, currently Ha Nam has 3 Brick Manufactures, two of them produce tuynel bricks with the total capacity of 50 million bricks per year, meeting 70% demand of bricks in the province. In order to meet all demand of local people and neighbouring area, Ha Nam would like to build two other cement manufactures. Each one will have a capacity of 20 million bricks a year, and the investment capital for one manufature is 1 million dollar.
In addition, in Ha Nam there are 6 building-stone-exploring and processing state-enterprises and more than 80 non-state enterprises (capacity of each one reaches from several hundreds to 2-3 million m3 of stone per year), which constitutes a building-materials-manufacture zone. The annual yield of exploited and processed stones gains 1.8-2 million m3. Technology of producing and choosing limestone, building stone and light powder stone is going to improve and be stable by the year 2010 to meet domestic demand.

| Thang Long Garment Factory |
In field of textile industry, Ha Nam Textile Enterprise has modern a fabric-reeling and weaving with German and Japanese technology. Up to now, enterprise has invested 2 million US dollars in Dong Van industrial zone and gets annual yield of 10 million m2 of fabrics.
Thread-reeling lines invested in Phu Ly are quite modern with 40,000 thread rolls and annual output of 8,000 tons of fabrics. The enterprise is preparing infrastructure and manufacturing location to call for investment.
Ha Nam has six garment factories and one wool-textile Factory belonging to four enterprises with a total of 4,500 sewing-machines. Export value increases rapidly from 1 million dollars in 1997 to 16 million dollars in 2002 and 18 million dollars in 2003.
Ha Nam still has abundant workforce for garment industry. Its orientation is to continue developing garment and textile industry attract local workers and increase export turnover by doubling the current capacity of factories and building more 2 factories with the investment capital of 2-3 million dollars in each factory.
Small-scale industry and trade village
Province Ha Nam has lots of potentials for developing small-scale industry, traditional handicraft and trade villages.

| Silk-weaving in Nha Xa |
Nha Xa silk-weaving-trade village in Moc Nam commune, Duy Tien district specializes in weaving silk and tussore. It has 500 looms with the annual yield of 1 million meters and creates jobs for 1,700 workers. If the cultivating-area of mulberry increases to 1,500 ha, the annual yield of silk will reach to 100 tons. Ha Nam needs to equip automatic looms in order to develop silk-weaving industry. Investment trend is to equip every household with high-tech automatic loom and get capacity 10 tons/1 loom/1 year and buy cocoons from neighbouring areas. Ha Nam can produce 100 to 250 tons of high quality silk from raw silk materials.
Hoa Hau weaving village in Ly Nhan commune specializes in producing cloths, bath towels and napkins. It has a scale of 2,500 looms with the capacity of 20 million meters fabric and 4 m. towels a year; and creates jobs for 7,000 workers. Now, Ha Nam needs invest for high weaving and reeling technology to make quality products for export.
Handmade-embroidery village makes colour and white embroideries with a plentiful of colors, designs and sizes... that meets demand of foreign market. The embroidery develops in many communes in the province and here is a main-point area of lace embroidery in Vietnam. Embroidered products are exported to American markets, European and some Asian markets.

| Embroidering village Thanh Ha |
Symbol of embroidering village is Thanh Ha commune, Thanh Liem District. Its population is more 11,000 people with more than 8,000 labours, of which the embroidery attracts more than 6,500 labours. Embroidery products mainly export to European and North Asian countries and achieves a turnover of 2m. USD a year.
Another traditional handicraft of Ha Nam province is the handmade rattan and bamboo-knitting in Hoang Dong commune, Duy Tien district. In this commune, there are nearly 1,700 households with about 8,000 people doing this work. Handmade rattan and bamboo products are mostly consumed in European, American and North Asian markets.
Fine art-hornmaking industry is a traditional industry in An Lao commune, Binh Luc province including 236 households working in this industry. Handicraft products made of animal's horns are decoration and home appliances. Main markets for fine art horns are in the East Europe and the North East Asia.
Agriculture
Agricultural production increases 3.5% a year and husbandry increases 7-9% annually; per capita food is stable at 520kg a year (5.6% higher in comparison with that in the period of 1997-2000).

| During the harvest |
There are intensive-farming and specializing zones of food crops with high yield, especially high-yield rice for export in districts of Duy Tien, Binh Luc and Ly Nhan.
Over the last several years, Ha Nam has been successful in transferring structure of agricultural products, of which, husbandry and aqua-culture become the key industries. The herbs of cattle and poultry increase rapidly both in quantity and quality. Nearly 2,000 ha of low-lying land in monoculture and uncultivated area have been changed to aquaculture and fresh vegetable growing, which supply materials for tomato-and-potato-processing factories. As planned, the cultivated area of fresh vegetable will be 100 ha and flower will be 200 ha by the year 2010.

| Milk-cows increase rapidly |
Ha Nam has carried out successfully milk-cow importing projects in order to supply for poultry industry. Up to now, there are 355 milk cows in Ha Nam, and as estimated this number will be 4,000 in 2010 with 50-60 litres milk a day. So Ha Nam will need to build one more milk-processing line in 2005-2007.

| High-quality breeding-pigs |
In Duy Tien district, there is a farm of purebred sows with an area of 4 ha, supplying high-quality breeding-pigs with the lean-meat rate of 50 - 60%. The farm now supplies about 1,000 to 1,500 breeding pigs for food and 250-400 sows a year. In 2010, the lean-meat capacity of Ha Nam will be 25 -30 tons a year, and it will need to build a export-frozen-meat processing factory with the annual capacity of 10,000 tons of meat.So province has to invest to build a frozen meat factory with capacity are 10,000 tons/year.

Aquaculture industry of Ha Nam has developed strongly with the application of new breeds, seeds and technologies that give a higher productivity. There are more than 2,000 ha for aquaculture. Some kinds of high-economic fishes such as trionychid turtle, butterfish; unsexed tilapia and green-clawed shrimp have been grown in Ha Nam... In 2002, the shrimp yield was 700 tons. As estimated, crayfish yield will be 10,000 - 15,000 tons in 2010. Therefore, Ha Nam also needs to build a line processing frozen shrimp, peeled shrimp and other products processed from shrimp to increase productivity of export-peeled shrimp to 3,000 tons a year.
The irrigation system has been build perfectly ensuring to irrigate 95% cultivated land area of the province.
Besides potentials for industry development, Ha Nam has potentials for tourism with many attractive ecotourism places and traditional cultural festivals. With the strong investment in tourism, Ha Nam's tourism will be developed with cultural characteristics of the North Delta and take an important role in economic development.
Ha Nam considers investment co-operation as a main key to promote the socioeconomic development. It is creating an advantageous investment environment by reforming the administrative procedures; issuing preferential policies on investment. It is investing in constructing and upgrading infrastructure, services, industrial zones; and training scientific, management and skilled workforce to meet requirements of join-venture enterprises.
With above potentials and strong investment co-operation, Ha Nam's economy is going to gain great achievements.
